UNN Lecturer Emerges UNIABUJA New Vice-Chancellor

Following the expiration of the tenure of Professor James Adelabu as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), a new VC has been appointed by the Governing Council of the university to pilot the affairs of the institution for the next 5 years.

The new man at the helm is Professor Michael Umale Adikwu, a professor of Pharmacy from University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN).
Professor Adikwu emerged as VC from a long list of 124 candidates who had applied for the post, which was later reduced to 10 and finally to three including Professors Umaru Garba Danbatta and Raheem Lawal.
Adikwu was born on 19th April 1963 in Amejo, Okpokwu Local Government Area, Benue State. He started his education at St. Paul’s Primary School, Utonkon between 1970 and 1975 before proceeding to Federal Government College, Jos in 1976.
In 1981, Professor Adikwu graduated from high school and gained admission to University of Nigeria, Nsukka to read Pharmacy and he graduated in 1986 with a second class honours (upper division) Bachelor degree. He also obtained his Master’s and Doctorate degrees from Nsukka in 1989 and 1994 respectively.
Adikwu joined the services of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka as a Lecturer II in Pharmacy Department from 1990 and in 1995, he was appointed as the Head of Department, a position he held until 1998, the same year he was made a Professor of Pharmaceutics. His second stint as Head of Department was between 2002 and 2004.
Until his appointment as UNIABUJA Vice Chancellor, he was the National Project Coordinator for Science and Technology Education Post-Basic (STEP-B-) Project in the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja.
The appointment of Prof. Adikwu as the new vice chancellor is expected to unify a divided academic community, restore academic stability and normalcy in the university of Abuja.
