Today, November 21, 2014 marks David Adeleke aka Davido’s 22nd birthday, and, boy, has he packed a lot into his short 22 years on this planet.
Davido is one of the top Nigerian celebrities that have been hit with lots of controversies yet he keeps getting out of them.
So, as he blows out the candles on his ‘Birthday Cake’, we’re celebrating by charting his 22most controversial moments…

1. When he released his first track ‘Omo baba olowo’ in 2012, many claimed he was a spoilt kid relying on his father’s wealth but he has acquired more wealth with his handwork and proved them wrong. “I didn’t tell God to give me a rich father, I was just lucky. I think people should even respect me more for trying to do my own thing because now I don’t ask him for one naira.” he stated in a
recent interview.
2. When his second hit track ‘All of you’ was released, fans accused him of mocking Wizkid and Wande Coal with some of the lyrics like ‘’Why I am in the game, i be baba now and everywhere I go them be halla now…all my fans made me bigger than. Because of them am bigger than
Some of you, some of you Actually am bigger than All of you” but he claimed otherwise and called them brothers.
3. After performing in Ghana in 2013, a certain Sonia Jumbo, a Nigerian girl studying in Ghana took pictures of them in bed and posted it on Twitter. Reacting to the controversy, Davido, claimed he was asleep when she took the pictures and then he eventually called her a bi*** on Twitter.
4. Months later, while performing in Malaysia, he got dagger dancing…one thing led to another and then he kissed a female fan on stage…. again critics were quick to point out that that was excessive for his very young age.
5. And then again, another photo of him on bed with some other girl surfaced! This time Davido said “I was asleep in bed. The girl just snuck in. I don’t know her. I used to stay in an apartment back then and movement was kind of free. Maybe I didn’t lock the door and she just snuck in and took the pix. I have however moved to my new home where there is much tighter security. I didn’t realise what was going on even after the pix was posted online””
6. When he got signed to MTN in 2012 and showed off his ten million naira cheque in excitement, fans lambasted him for his immaturity and pettiness …he had to take down the tweeted image of the cheque and apologized saying “I’m sorry, I never knew God would take me this far, I got carried away :)”
7. He allegedly beat up a taxi driver on July 1st, 2012 when the latter had gone to drop off Davido’s ‘girlfriend’ at a hotel. Reports claimed Davido dealt him some slaps and slammed his head against the steering wheel. Reacting however, Davido tweeted ‘don’t believe all you read people, smh”
8. In 2013, he got everyone talking by posting a photo of himself in the midst of some strippers in a stripper club.
9. Still in 2013, he was accused of stealing his hit track – Gobe. It was claimed that – its production, lyrics et al – was stolen from an up-and-coming act, Password, who had released a song of the same title and had just made a few tweaks to the verses and hook. Davido however quelled the controversy and rumors by revealing that – although his new single is a re-make of Password‘s “Gobe” – his new single was in fact done with the artist and HKN’s in-house producer, Shizzi.
10. Also in 2013, a Kenyan visen Pendo claimed Davido had a one night stand with her when he was in Kenya for a musical performance at the 2013 Boombaataa Festival. “..When it was time to leave he held my hand and we left, on reaching the car the organiser said it wouldn’t be safe because of the media so David paid for my cab that followed them directly to the hotel located in Hurlingham, when I got there he sent his deejay (Olu) to give me his key card to his room as he talked to someone…he escorted me to the room and the rest is self explanatory!! am not like those girls who take pix in bed and all…but I got proof,as he left me some when he left for his flight early morning!“
Reacting however, Davido said ““Who the hell is Pendo…I don’t give a damn who she is. I am not interested,””
11. He used the F-word on the Nigerian Immigration Service, at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos sometime in May, 2014, claiming that they asked him for a bribe.
12. Still on the NIS saga, the service refuted claims by Davido on Instagram that NIS officers did not allow him to depart from the country because of his refusal to bribe them. In a statement by the NIS Public Relations Officer, Emeka Obua, the service said Davido had approached immigration officers at MMIA…in company with his bodyguards, started protesting in a disorderly manner, prompting the Comptroller of Immigration in-charge at MMIA to intervene. He advised Adeleke to call his bodyguards to order (caution) and comply with the lawful instruction which would not only erase any doubt as to his immigration status but also establish his claim to dual citizenship.
13. Then the Skelewu video brouhaha, he released about three different versions of the video just to please his fans.
14. One of the videos led to a clash between Davido and director, Sesan who had to issue a press release saying “My attention is drawn toward the chaos surrounding the release of the Skelewu video. Myself and my team shot the video for Davido in Nigeria and to the best of my knowledge my client and his team were very happy with the result, when they watched/ and approved the video. If he has since had a change of heart, that is ok. I am not in any way responsible for the release of the video. I believe Davido and myself did a very good job regarding the video production and as a professional of over 10 years. I find it very irresponsible and immature if my client and his management publicly put out false statements/comments, in an attempt to tarnish my name, credibility and reputation. I remain dedicated, humble, focused and as hard working as ever. Thank you to all my fans and industry professionals – Stay blessed.”
15. Earlier this year, the singer caused a commotion at the Babcock university convocation. The moment the singer walked into the complex, the shouts of his name from students and fans rented the air, causing Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to suspend her speech.When normalcy could not be restored after several minutes, Davido’s father, Chief Deji Adeleke, rescued the situation by calling out to his superstar son. “David! David! Leave this place now, and follow me where ever I go”, the father intervened.
15. A fan referred to him “an over tattoed teenager’ on a blog but he didn’t give a damn, he said ‘it is my body and I’ve always liked art’.
16. He allegedly got into a brawl at a club months ago. After his impressive performance at the #Colourfulworldofmore concert which held at Eko Hotel and Suites, the singer and his entourage allegedly engaged in a brawl at the Nu Grotto night club, 217 Etim Inyang Crescent Victoria Island while having an after party celebration. Davido did not react to the story.
17. Then he was accused of impregnating one Sunshine Haye, a Jamaican but London based model. The 23 year old model who was indded pregnant and expecting a set of twins however cleared the air on the allegations, “wow, you so called Humans (animals) really have nothing better to do with your lives but chat shit! Don’t mention my name in your boring lies!” she wrote.
